Looking for plant hire near you in Cornwall? RW Groundworks hires out excavators, dumpers, rollers, and compaction equipment from our base in Helston. You're hiring directly from the operator, which means transparent pricing with no broker markup, well-maintained equipment from a fleet of over 10 machines, and practical advice on which machine suits your job.
Available for self-drive hire (with valid tickets) or operated hire with an experienced RW Groundworks operator. Delivery and collection arranged across Cornwall.

All rates are day rates unless stated. Carriage (delivery and collection) charged on top based on distance from Helston.
Need a machine on site? — Operated or self-drive available
Get a Hire QuoteThe workhorse for large-scale groundworks, demolition, and bulk excavation. Handles deep foundations, major earthworks, road construction, and site clearance with ease. Suitable for housing developments, commercial projects, and large agricultural work.
The go-to machine for domestic groundworks, garden landscaping, driveway preparation, and drainage installation. Compact enough to access most residential properties while still delivering serious digging capability.
Forward tipping 7-tonne dumper for moving spoil, aggregate, and materials on site. Essential on any project where material needs shifting efficiently. Covers rough ground and slopes that wheelbarrows and mini dumpers can't handle.
Ride-on roller for compacting sub-bases, Type 1 aggregate, tarmac, and finished surfaces. Delivers the compaction force needed for driveways, car parks, and road surfaces. Vibration and static modes.
Smaller ride-on roller for tighter spaces and lighter compaction work. Suitable for paths, patios, and areas where the 120 roller is too wide or heavy. Also used for finishing layers on larger projects.
Remote-controlled trench roller designed for compacting backfill in trenches and confined spaces where ride-on rollers can't access. High compaction force in a compact footprint. Operated by remote control, keeping the operator at a safe distance.
Hand-operated plate compactor for sub-base preparation on driveways, patios, paths, and block paving. Moves forward and in reverse, making it effective in confined areas. The standard compaction tool for domestic hard landscaping.

Operated Hire:
Hire any machine with an experienced RW Groundworks operator. The operator arrives with the machine, works to your direction, and takes the machine away at the end of the day. This is the right option if you don't hold the relevant CPCS tickets, or if you want someone who knows the machine inside out running it on your site.
Operated hire rates include the machine and the operator. Fuel is charged at cost.
Self-Drive Hire:
If you hold the relevant CPCS or NPORS tickets, you can hire any machine on a self-drive basis. Machines are delivered to site and collected at the end of the hire period. A brief handover covers the controls and any machine-specific features.
Valid tickets must be presented before the machine is released. Insurance cover must be confirmed — either your own plant insurance or cover arranged through RW Groundworks.

RW Groundworks delivers plant across Cornwall. Machines are transported on our low-loader and delivered to site at the agreed time. Delivery costs depend on distance from Helston — call for a quote. For multi-day hires, the machine stays on site and delivery/collection is charged once.

Here are answers to common questions about our services.

Day rates start at £260 for our 3.3-tonne Hitachi mini excavator and £550 for the 14-tonne Doosan. Delivery and collection are charged on top based on distance from Helston. Weekly rates and multi-machine discounts are available — call Reuben on 07385 250920 for a quote based on your specific requirements.
For self-drive hire, you need a valid CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS card for the machine category. For operated hire, no — our experienced operator runs the machine on your behalf. If you don't hold the right tickets, operated hire is the straightforward option.
Operated hire means the machine comes with a qualified operator from RW Groundworks. The operator drives the machine, works to your direction on site, and handles all aspects of machine operation. You get the machine and the expertise. This is the standard choice for customers who don't operate plant regularly.
For most domestic jobs — driveways, landscaping, drainage, small foundations — a 3-tonne mini excavator is the right choice. For new builds, large excavations, demolition, and road construction, the 14-tonne excavator is needed. Dumpers are sized to match — a 7-tonne dumper pairs well with the 14-tonne excavator. Call Reuben with a description of the job and he'll recommend the right machine.
Delivery costs depend on distance from our Helston base. Within the Helston and Penwith area, delivery is typically included or charged at a flat rate. Wider Cornwall deliveries are quoted individually. For multi-day hires, delivery and collection are charged once regardless of hire duration.
A deposit may be required for self-drive hire, refundable on return of the machine in good condition. The deposit amount depends on the machine hired. Operated hire does not require a deposit — invoiced on standard terms on completion of the hire period.
A micro digger weighs under 1 tonne and fits through standard doorways — used for indoor work, very tight access, and small garden jobs. A mini digger (like our 3.3T Hitachi) weighs 1 to 6 tonnes and handles most domestic and light commercial excavation. For anything beyond foundations and drainage on a single property, you'll typically need a mini digger at minimum. RW Groundworks can advise on which size suits your project.
Our 3.3-tonne Hitachi is approximately 1.5 metres wide, which fits through most side access gates. Standard garden gates are typically 0.9m to 1.2m wide — too narrow for tracked machines. If side access is tight, we can sometimes track across a front garden or use a smaller attachment. Call Reuben with your access measurements and we'll confirm whether the machine can reach the work area.
