Operated or Self-Drive Hire

 Block Paving Driveways

Operated Hire:

Hire any machine with an experienced RW Groundworks operator. The operator arrives with the machine, works to your direction, and takes the machine away at the end of the day. This is the right option if you don't hold the relevant CPCS tickets, or if you want someone who knows the machine inside out running it on your site.

Operated hire rates include the machine and the operator. Fuel is charged at cost.

Self-Drive Hire:

If you hold the relevant CPCS or NPORS tickets, you can hire any machine on a self-drive basis. Machines are delivered to site and collected at the end of the hire period. A brief handover covers the controls and any machine-specific features.

Valid tickets must be presented before the machine is released. Insurance cover must be confirmed — either your own plant insurance or cover arranged through RW Groundworks.

Why Choose Us

Why Hire from RW Groundworks

Owner-operated fleet. Every machine is owned by Reuben, not rented from a national chain. You deal directly with the owner — no call centres, no middlemen.

Well-maintained equipment. All machines are regularly serviced and inspected. Breakdowns are rare, but if one happens, a replacement is arranged quickly from the fleet.

Practical advice included. Not sure which machine you need? Call Reuben and describe the job. With 12 years of operating experience across groundworks, highways, and demolition, he can recommend the right machine and save you hiring something too big, too small, or not fit for purpose.

F.A.Q

Frequently Asked

Questions

Here are answers to common questions about our services.

How much does it cost to hire a digger for a day?

Day rates start at £260 for our 3.3-tonne Hitachi mini excavator and £550 for the 14-tonne Doosan. Delivery and collection are charged on top based on distance from Helston. Weekly rates and multi-machine discounts are available — call Reuben on 07385 250920 for a quote based on your specific requirements.

Do I need a licence to hire a digger?

For self-drive hire, you need a valid CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS card for the machine category. For operated hire, no — our experienced operator runs the machine on your behalf. If you don't hold the right tickets, operated hire is the straightforward option.

What is operated plant hire?

Operated hire means the machine comes with a qualified operator from RW Groundworks. The operator drives the machine, works to your direction on site, and handles all aspects of machine operation. You get the machine and the expertise. This is the standard choice for customers who don't operate plant regularly.

How do I choose the right size machine?

For most domestic jobs — driveways, landscaping, drainage, small foundations — a 3-tonne mini excavator is the right choice. For new builds, large excavations, demolition, and road construction, the 14-tonne excavator is needed. Dumpers are sized to match — a 7-tonne dumper pairs well with the 14-tonne excavator. Call Reuben with a description of the job and he'll recommend the right machine.

How much does plant delivery cost?

Delivery costs depend on distance from our Helston base. Within the Helston and Penwith area, delivery is typically included or charged at a flat rate. Wider Cornwall deliveries are quoted individually. For multi-day hires, delivery and collection are charged once regardless of hire duration.

Is there a deposit for plant hire?

A deposit may be required for self-drive hire, refundable on return of the machine in good condition. The deposit amount depends on the machine hired. Operated hire does not require a deposit — invoiced on standard terms on completion of the hire period.

What is the difference between a micro digger and a mini digger?

A micro digger weighs under 1 tonne and fits through standard doorways — used for indoor work, very tight access, and small garden jobs. A mini digger (like our 3.3T Hitachi) weighs 1 to 6 tonnes and handles most domestic and light commercial excavation. For anything beyond foundations and drainage on a single property, you'll typically need a mini digger at minimum. RW Groundworks can advise on which size suits your project.

Can a mini digger fit through a garden gate?

Our 3.3-tonne Hitachi is approximately 1.5 metres wide, which fits through most side access gates. Standard garden gates are typically 0.9m to 1.2m wide — too narrow for tracked machines. If side access is tight, we can sometimes track across a front garden or use a smaller attachment. Call Reuben with your access measurements and we'll confirm whether the machine can reach the work area.
